So I guess I should start off this post by saying that this is a copycat recipe: I took a look at the ingredients of one of my favorite Trader Joe’s finds, sourced some of the ingredients, then put my own personal spin on it. I absolutely love garlic in virtually any form so I added garlic to the mix and was truly inspired by the result.
Something to note specifically about this recipe is the time needed, not the time you’ll need to set aside to actually prepare this but what will be needed for the flavors to actually meld together. This is one of those things that gets better as it ages. I let mine sit for 2 whole weeks before I actually tasted it and was blown away!!! All you really need is a few days but you will find that this only gets better with time.
The possibilities are limitless here as you can use this mixture to accompany a variety of different sauces, meats, soups, breads, and many other things. Imagine making a homemade pizza and stirring some of this into your pasta sauce, talk about a way to elevate something already magical.
AN IMPORTANT TIDBIT: You’ll want layers of flavor, especially in this sauce. To achieve this, it’ll be important to toast the minced onion ever so slightly…this will really help develop the flavors.
This particular recipe packs a bit of a punch..it’s a bit spicy!!! If you’re sensitive to a little heat, you will definitely want to start off with 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes, then wait a few days before tasting to see if the flavor has intensified to your liking.

A copycat to Trader Joe’s Chili Onion Crunch, this is a spin on the original with a few different flavors.
3/4 cup light olive oil (or other lightly flavored oil)
3 tablespoons dried toasted minced onion
3 tablespoons dried minced garlic
2 tablespoons red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon sea salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
- Toast minced onion. Combine all ingredients. Let sit for a few days before enjoying
This is a bit spicy, if you are sensitive to spice, use 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes and let sit a couple days, taste, then add more red pepper flakes if desired.
